As part of the Nigerian Centenary celebration, President Goodluck Jonathan has launched a new N100 commemorative note designed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. Godwin Emefiele, CBN governor, unveiled the notes together with the President and Namadi Sambo, vice president at today’s Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting. He explained that the commemorative notes were issued to celebrate100 years of the Nigeria’s amalgamation.
While noting that the new note was produced with the most advanced security features in the world, Emefiele said that countries like Morocco, Russia, Costa Rica and other countries around the world had issued currencies in the past to mark notable events. He noted that the design platforms on which the note was made ensures security, durability, attractiveness, cultural heritage and transformation.
President Jonathan commended the CBN for coming up with the idea of the commemorative note, although it is somehow late as activities marking the nation’s centenary celebrations were already over.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, minister of finance, also lauded the CBN’s effort with special commendation to the quick response code, QRC, feature on the back of the note. The code, if scanned with smart phones, leads users to a website where the nation’s history could be accessed.
