As proof of its commitment to addressing the housing deficit in the country, the federal government has commissioned a 102-unit ministerial pilot-housing scheme funded by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, FMBN. The project is the first of such exercise in the six geo-political zones of the country.
Akon Eyakenyi, minister of Lands Housing and Urban Development, explained at the commissioning in Suleja, Niger State, that the project is a demonstration of the desire of President Goodluck Jonathan to bring affordable houses to the doorsteps of citizens, particularly low-income earners. She commended the President for the impressive steps his administration has taken in the last four years to refurbish and re-invigorate the housing sector and ensure that Nigerians have access to affordable and quality housing.
The ministry provided the land while the project was funded by FMBN and the developers were responsible for the actual construction based on specifications and timelines.
Gimba Ya’u Kumo, managing director of FMBN, had earlier said that the manner of collaboration has been successfully implemented in the six geo political zones of the country for the benefit of Nigerians, especially contributors to the National Housing Scheme. Kumo explained that the 102 housing units is made up of 32 units of one bedroom bungalow, 40 units of two bedroom bungalows, and 30 units of three bedroom bungalows all delivered at affordable prices for off-takers.
